A Billion Agents User guide

Account and computer

Connecting GitHub

Connecting your GitHub accounts, installing the GitHub App where your agents should work, and choosing the account each agent uses.

Connect a GitHub account, and your agents can work on GitHub through it: read and change repositories, issues and pull requests (proposed changes put up for review), and run commands such as git and gh on their computers. They act as you, through the account you connected, and only in the repositories where you install the GitHub App.

GitHub accounts

Account, then GitHub accounts, lists the GitHub accounts you have connected.

GitHub accounts with two accounts connected, @riley marked Default and @sam, each “Connected”, with where the App is installed and a Disconnect button, and Connect another account and Add an organisation at the bottom.

For each account it shows:

  • its GitHub login, such as “@riley”, marked Default when you have more than one. The default is the account you connected first;
  • “Connected”, with the name on its GitHub profile;
  • Installed on: the accounts and organisations where the GitHub App is installed for it, each with “All repositories” or “Selected repositories”, or “Not installed on any account or organisation yet.”;
  • Disconnect.

You can connect any number of GitHub accounts, such as a work one and a personal one, whichever way you sign in. A GitHub account can be connected to only one account in the app.

Connecting an account

Click Connect a GitHub account, or Connect another account when you have one already. GitHub asks which of your GitHub accounts to use, and to approve the connection; then you come back to this screen.

Signing in to the app with GitHub connects that account too (see Signing in and your account).

Installing the App

Your agents reach only the repositories where the GitHub App is installed. If an account you connect reaches no installation, the app asks you to Install on GitHub, where you choose an account or organisation and its repositories, and brings you back when you are done. Not now skips it.

To install it somewhere else later, such as on an organisation, click Add an organisation on GitHub accounts. A change you make on GitHub, such as installing the App on more repositories, shows here the next time you open the screen.

Disconnecting

Click Disconnect, then Disconnect again to confirm. Agents that act through that account lose GitHub until you connect it again or choose another account for them.

If you revoke the App’s access on GitHub, the account shows as disconnected, with Sign in with GitHub again to connect it again.

Which account an agent uses

Each agent acts through your default account, unless you choose another for it. To choose, open the agent’s Agent info and pick an account under GitHub account. The line under it says which account the agent acts as, such as “Researcher acts on GitHub as @riley.” The choice is saved as soon as you pick it.

If the account an agent uses is disconnected, the agent keeps it chosen and cannot use GitHub until you connect that account again or choose another; the line under the picker says so. The agent does not move to another account by itself.

What agents do on GitHub

An agent turns GitHub on in a session when its work needs it. It can work with repositories, issues, pull requests and GitHub Actions, reading and writing, as the account it acts through, and on its computer git and gh work as that account with nothing for you to set up. Its commits carry that account’s name. If you connect GitHub during an agent’s session, the agent can use it from its next session.
