An agent’s browser

How an agent uses a web browser, taking over its browser for a sign-in, approving a step that is hard to undo, and saved sign-ins.

An agent can use a web browser of its own: it opens pages, reads them, clicks through them and fills in forms. Ask it to look something up on a site, or to do something there, and it does it in its browser, then tells you the result. The browser tells sites that it is automated.

Two things in a browser need you: signing in, and steps that are hard to undo. For both, the agent asks with a card in the conversation and waits for your answer.

Taking over its browser

When a site needs a sign-in, a code from your phone or a check that you are a person, the agent hands its browser to you:

A conversation in which Chief of Staff asks you to take over its browser: a card naming the site, the agent’s reason, and Open browser, Done and Cannot finish buttons, with “Finish in the browser, then come back and press Done.”
  1. Click Open browser. A live view of the agent’s browser opens in a new tab, where you use it yourself.
  2. Sign in, or do what the site asks.
  3. Come back to the conversation and click Done. The agent carries on from there.

If you cannot finish, click Cannot finish, and the agent is told so. If your browser blocks the new tab, allow pop-ups for the app and click Open browser again.

A sign-in you finish is saved for that agent alone, so it is signed in the next time it visits the site.

Approving a step that is hard to undo

Before a step that is hard to undo and matters, such as placing an order, paying, sending a message, changing an account’s settings, deleting something or accepting terms, the agent asks you first:

A conversation in which Chief of Staff asks before it acts: a card reading Click “Place order” on fixtures.browser.test, with Allow and Decline buttons.

The card names the action and the site. Click Allow to let the agent take it, or Decline to stop it. The agent does not take the step unless you allow it, and a card you leave unanswered for a day counts as declined. Steps that are easy to undo, such as adding to a cart or saving a draft, go ahead without asking.

Saved sign-ins

Saved sign-ins in an agent’s Agent info lists the sites you signed in to in its browser, with when each was saved and last used. Only that agent uses them.

Click Remove, then Remove again, to delete one. The agent asks you to sign in again when it next needs the site. Removing it deletes the saved copy only: to end the sign-in itself, sign out on the site.

The section appears once the agent has a saved sign-in.
